From Slaughterford we move on to Yatton Keynell and the wonderful Kathy Hutton. Her studio is a joy to visit – light and fresh and full of inspiration. Kathy will be offering botanical print workshops during the trail – check her website for details. Be warned, she will book up quickly! Kathy is also a committee member so if you need any help on the Trail, Kathy will be happy to help.
Having trained in textile design and worked as a designer/product developer, Kathy is now a printmaker, producing her own original art and teaching beginners printing workshops from her home studio.
All of Kathy’s work is hand printed, building layers slowly, “with as much love for the process as for the plants that inspire”. When out and about, Kathy will often spot something fallen on the path or growing in hedgerows that will inspire her, resulting in art that has its own unique character due to the spontaneous nature of printing.
Kathy tells us, “after I had my first child I wasn’t drawing or printing for a long time. I didn’t realise at the time, but I’d lost a bit of my identity. For me, creating my art is a very big part of who I am. It gives me a strength and a sense of pride, without it I don’t feel completely me”. Kathy works from her beautiful studio at home, looking out over her garden and the fields beyond – the changing seasons being a constant source of inspiration.
When she’s not printing, Kathy enjoys spending time with her family outdoors, “be it at the beach, searching for pebbles and pottery shards or stomping in the countryside”. Juggling all aspects of a small business can be tricky, but exhibiting on the Peacock Arts Trail is a hugely positive experience. It gives Kathy the chance to evaluate her work and acts as “a mini mile stone – a stepping stone, you can look back on how far you’ve come to this point”.
