We’re delighted to welcome two new artists who will be exhibiting at Woolley Grange Farm – a short distance from Box and Wadswick Green.
Mary mostly paints in oils using a palette knife, but she have been known to use quality household paint left over from bespoke kitchen painting jobs! Her long term partner is a bespoke furniture and kitchen maker and Mary hand paints his kitchens. Describing her work, Mary says, “I enjoy the constraint and resulting harmony of using a limited and often muted palette. This also extends through to my ceramics and I hope that my paintings and the stoneware ceramics relate to one another and sit well together”.
Mary also has a little shop in Bradford-on-Avon ‘Stone Paper Scissors’, which is also her studio. It’s one of seven studios that are converted cow sheds, looking out onto a beautiful garden, a stones throw from the impressive Tithe Barn and the beautiful river Avon. Mary has always drawn and painted because she loves it and after some time of being a full-time mother, she studied for three years at the Sue Burns Art School, where she honed her skills. There, Mary learned how to use oils, mix colours, use a limited palette and whole lot more and she would have continued had she not been offered the shop/studio space. It was from here that Mary started selling the work she made at Sue Burns Art School, which of course gave her the confidence to produce more.
Mary loves what she does and reflects, “at times I can sit quietly and get on with my painting, other times I’m greeting and chatting to people, sometimes about my work. And of course it’s a huge compliment when someone buys a piece, even if it’s just a card!”
Having completed and Art and Design course at Hammersmith College in 1996, Helen has since further developed her skills through courses at Trowbridge College and at Sue Burns Art School. Usually painting in a room above her garage, away from the distractions of house chores, Helen’s cat often joins her – “I secretly think he’d like to paint too”, she tells us!
This is Helen’s first time participating in the Peacock Arts Trail, and she aims to develop her work by continuing to explore various media and techniques. It is important to Helen to create texture and capture atmosphere in her paintings and her work is greatly influenced by her local surroundings and her travels to France, Spain and Italy.
