Maker Spotlight - Sam Perry

Maker Spotlights: each day we will be focusing on individual exhibitors, exploring their work and finding out what makes them tick...

Sam is a sculptor working in wood constructions.

With a life long interest in architecture and the built environment, Sam is inspired by our city skylines: urban residuals, forgotten follies, towers, rooftop pinnacles, lanterns, belvedere structures and spires.

The high-rise buildings that she grew up surrounded by gave her an appreciation of the role and form of architecture.

When asked what a typical day involves, Sam replied, “I sketch, I build models, I take photos and I build sculptures in my wood working studio. I plan and run art workshops and teaching events”. The favourite part of Sam’s job is, “realising my ideas and seeing them come to life is the best. I enjoy the thrill of chasing the wind.”

Sam tells us that her biggest challenge is redefining the next step to push herself further. “Art is always optimistic, always a projection of future possibilities. Art prevents stagnation, gives a voice to the unspoken and realises unseen dreams. It is a positive force”.
